- B. mallei는 B. pseudomallei와 유전적으로 매우 비슷하며 DNA 서열 길이만 1.4 Mb 짧다.

- B. pseudomallei의 한 strain이 동물을 감염시켜 숙주로 삼게 되면서 물/토양에서의 생존에 필수적이던 일부 gene들이 사라지고 B. mallei로 진화하였다는 가설이 현재 가장 유력.

- B. mallei 가 mammalian host 외부에서 검출된 바 없다는 사실을 설명 가능.
